Case Presented by Dr. Neville Hatfield
The patient presented with a recurrent chip on the incisal-labial-facial (ILF) surfaces of tooth #8. DMG America’s Ecosite Elements universal nanohybrid restorative composite was selected as the restorative material, utilizing both the Pure Body Shade A1 and the Layer Enamel Medium Shade to achieve an optimal esthetic outcome.
In cases such as this, it is beneficial to use the contralateral “sister” tooth—#9 in this instance—as a reference for shade selection and translucency. The incisal edge of tooth #9, as well as the remaining incisal edge of #8, exhibit a unique translucency where the enamel is neither highly translucent nor completely opaque. To replicate this natural appearance, the Enamel Medium Shade of Ecosite Elements was selected as the outermost layer of the restoration. The base shade of both #8 and #9 was determined to be A1.
A slight bevel was created on the facial and lingual enamel surfaces using diamond burs. The base layer of Pure Shade A1 was applied, followed by a layer of Enamel Shade Medium. The restoration was then contoured and shaped with diamond burs and subsequently polished using finishing disks and composite polishing paste. A key advantage of the Ecosite Elements system is its ability to enhance characterization within the restoration by utilizing its various composite components. This system facilitates the highly detailed and life-like recreation of natural tooth structure while simplifying the clinician’s shade selection process
